A Soldiers Peace c 12/10/04

I want to find a soldier’s peace
Far from home love and doing free things under the sun.

Alone in Company, far from soft arms
Back to back with brother, eye to eye with tombstones.

Where promises and prayers don’t add up to eagle eyes
Where the future turns the corner with God in hand.

I want to find a soldier’s peace
In the dirt ditch for words and ribbons of red.

Trapped in terror dirt and rock
Touched by a letter, a line, a word of gravy home.

Where hands reach out for life in uniform
Where past and the future breathe smoky thoughts.

I want to find a soldier’s peace
Far from drama’s best performance.

A peace that can’t be carried only shared
A peace that can’t be one, only cost.

I want to find a soldier’s peace
In a freedom carried high in thoughts and ways.

I want to find a soldier’s peace
On the way home or here forever.
