Your athletic shoes have  a big job to do - can they keep step?
Athletic shoes are loud-and-clear fashion statements, and wearing top-of-the-line shoes shouts to the world, "Hey, look how much I can spend on sneakers!"  Here's a more common-sense view:

The real job of athletic shoes, however, is to protect you from

  • Repetitive-use injuries to your feet and ankles

  • Twisting injuries to your ankes and knees

Total force on feet from a 1-mile walk: 80 to 100 tons
